Just watch it! Seriously!

This is one of my favourite dramas if not my favourite one EVER! Everything from the story to the casting was just phenomenal. It was so realistic that it hurt ! I also loved the tropes it tackled. Taboo and hard ones.

The only remark (?) I could make about this series is the limited amount of songs it used. But it wasn't really to the point where it bothered me and ones that were used were just perfect for it.

If there was 2 word to describe Something In the Rain it would be "Perfect Chemistery".

From good to bad

This drama started of so good and I loved it. And the half way stage it just went downhill and it became so hard to watch it. It started of sweet and romantic and ended so bad.
The FL character was so bad at the beginning I felt bad for everything she went through but I could not believe how badly she treated the ML. She told lie after lie and he still forgave her. And it always seemed that he cared more for her and he always put her first, but she could not do the same. Around episode 9 I just wanted the drama to finish and I didn't enjoy it at the end. It was so bad that I wanted them not to be together. Even at the end it made me angry that he ran after her, when she always did something wrong. The song stand by your man was totally wrong and ironic to the story. It was more like stand by your woman. She was the one that did most of the things wrong. This is definitely not a re-watch drama it will only make you angry and frustrated.
If you do watch it
It will be a let down

I'm only here for Jung Hae In.

After watching "One Spring Night" I almost felt obligated to watch "Something in The Rain" too. The main reason I wanted to watch was to see more of Jung Hae-in who I have a newfound appreciation for, even if these dramas aren't actually new. I loved him so much in "One Spring Night", and I knew this was similar, so I wanted to see him in this too. In that respect, I definitely wasn't disappointed. Unlike "A Piece of Your Mind", where I thought his talent was wasted, I think he really shines in this one. I'm definitely glad I watched and got hooked pretty quickly, but he is literally the only thing that made me want to keep watching... and I know that's ironic considering who's in my profile pic!

I will just start with this drama's biggest flaw for me, and that's Son Ye Jin as Yoon Jin Ah. It's hard to get into a romantic story when the main character irritates you as much as Jin Ah irritated me. Not only was she written to be selfish, immature, and annoying, but Son Ye Jin kept trying to play her as cute and silly and quirky which just made her even more annoying. She just seemed way too mature in age to be acing so childishly, which was a huge contrast to baby faced Hae In acting more mature in comparison. Maybe that's intentional but it was definitely hard to root for, even if their chemistry was amazing. It also could be cultural since I can't relate to how controlled by her parents she was as a grown-up, or how classism was so normalized. I usually like flawed characters too but It was hard to find redeeming qualities in Jin Ah. Joon Hee is a flawed character too, but I just kept wanting him to dump her and date someone better.

The supporting cast is generally good, but because the story is so weak I wasn't too impressed. My favorite member of the supporting cast was Jang So Yeon, she was great as sister and BFF, I just wish she had more of her own storyline. Jin Ah's family had some good performances, especially Kil Hae Yeon playing such a different mom from "One Spring Night", but the writing made her so repetitive that her performance just became an overdone trope, all she needed was a money envelope and to throw water in someone face. The writing definitely made me underwhelmed by certain performances. Oh Ryoong as her boyfriend at the beginning of the drama was pretty bad, but that also could be blamed on bad writing. There was also a lot of the story and many characters that I didn't care about at all, especially at her job.

To be honest, this whole story could have been a movie, but instead, it's drawn out into 16 episodes. The good thing is that watching their relationship build is entertaining. There are lots of cute, sexy, and romantic scenes to fill the time. There is also a random plot about sexual harassment that drags and feels like filler. No part of that story was interesting to me, and the whole coffee company subplot felt like product placement, not the empowering story it was meant to be, but that could be my cultural bias too. I know this is the exact same writer and director as "One Spring Night", but I definitely feel like the story and direction are not as good in this drama, and I don't think that would have changed if I saw this first. The direction is still great, with some beautiful shots, but not as moving.

Would I watch this again? No. I would watch a few scenes again, but I definitely couldn't sit through all 16 episodes without skipping most of it. The most annoying thing would be hearing "Save the Last Dance" and "Stand by Your Man" over and over again ad nauseam! It didn't help that in my head I kept changing the lyrics to "Stand By Your Man" to "Please Date her friend" (meaning Bo Ra), but the obnoxiously played English soundtrack is another thing this drama has in common with "One Spring Night". Some of the songs were good, but too often were misused in a distracting way.

Overall, if you're a fan of Jung Hae In this is still worth watching. I think this is his first starring role, and his babyfaced charm is perfect for a Noona-romance lead! Maybe bigger fans of Son Ye Jin will like her in this role as well, but I just couldn't empathize with her at all, nor understand what he even liked about her. If you are looking for chemistry, that is this dramas main appeal! If you're looking for an original story, you won't find much originality here. This writer also seems to want to tackle serious issues like abuse and sexism, but the evil male caricatures make these plots hard to take seriously. "Something In The Rain" has passion but no plot. The ending also didn't feel very satisfying after so many frustrating episodes. It has attractive leads in a story that goes nowhere slowly, which may be enough for some viewers. I think this was supposed to be Jin Ah's journey to independence but in reality, I didn't see much growth with her character, it was more about me waiting for more scenes with Joon Hee and rooting for him to finally move on. Every scene with him was worth watching, and I now officially consider him an actor favorite. Without him, this drama is easily dropable. Maybe constantly playing "Stand by your Man" was subliminally keeping me watching after all. However, "La la la... laaa ..." how I wished it would've ended 6 episodes sooner. I really wanted to like this drama much more based on how it started but I was definitely ready to leave it all behind by the end and await whatever is next for Jung Hae In.

Tbh I felt obligated to write one , coz this drama gave me really beautiful feelings like really I felt everything like it was me who’s living it , the acting is just so amazing the main couple woah especially the male lead and ofc I fell in love with him xD , the feelings in the drama is just real so beautiful makes you smile without knowing and act with all , I hated some roles like really I wanted to just jump in the screen and kill them you’ll know when you watch it who I mean , and , don’t continue reading coz it may be a spoiler , I’m the type who likes to get to affected in dramas and last parts gave TOTALY to me I was disappointed at the decisions at first but it went so well and made me cry for over an hour so I was so really happy, I don’t think I’ll forget this piece of art soon and I’m so grateful for that , I’m the end I love Jon he really so much ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

It's a simple story, but the writing is fantastic, the acting is great and the directing is phenomenal. I seriously recommend this drama!

The chemistry between the two leads was absolutely fantastic and I really enjoyed watching them. I thought that it might be weird because I'm not personally a big fan of Noona - Dongsaeng relationships in drama's, but I was pleasantly surprised by how tastefully it was played out and by just how much chemistry they had.

Jung Hae-In never disappoints. love him~

so realistic.

the drama is really good i expected it to be more too much love or too much kissing like the other romance dramas but this is so much different and i like it. the couple aren’t toxic at all the relationship is not toxic at all but there are still problems in their life affecting their relationship and that’s the reality.

the only things which annoyed me.. is jina’s mother. she really really was too much. she thinks everything has to go on her way. everyone has to live how she wants to. jina is over 30 years old i don’t really understand why her mother yet treat her as a 10 year old girl who has no idea of the world.

otherwise i liked this drama really much. didn’t disappoint me. the end is to me okay.

It's all too real

You know how they say a film is different to a movie, well this is an perfect example. This was truly a film drama. There was no real solid storyline, the focus was on how two people different in age deal with the taboos of being in a relationship in society. The authenticity and realness in the story will surprise you, they do not sugarcoat the struggles of family pressure, sibling relationship, expectations of being married at a certain age and to a well off person. The director has done a great job in portraying all the perspectives of the characters, the ones in love but also the families and people around them. There was no bias I saw as a viewer.

The beginning consisted of their love developing and then the second half with the challenges they face, their relationship and struggles were shown with such honesty and rawness that it kept me hooked till the end. The screenplay can get slow at times, but there isn't a episode where it felt like a waste of time, every scene and episode contributed to the journey of all the characters and their emotions. Hats off to the intimate scenes in this drama, you really felt the main leads chemistry, intensity, maturity and understanding they have for each other. The cast all did an brilliant job. Although the one that make an impact for me was Jung hae-in. If you enjoy a nice lead with an protective nature. You'll enjoy this love story. That being said all the characters in this drama are shown to be flawed, from the lovers to the parents. The drama doesn't hide away from this. They all make mistakes, like manipulating others, being selfish, suppressing others feelings and emotions. Although what was troubling is that the writer never addressed these flaws or let the characters take proper accountability. Maybe, the aim was to show we are all flawed and troubled but of course that doesn't mean it's condoned in my opinion.

However, as a viewer when you follow two people's journey and the struggles they face, the end becomes important. As disappointed as many people were, the arch towards the ending never developed. After a few weeks reflecting on it I can understand why. I don't want to spoil it so i want to say the ending or towards the ending, it was realistic. Although it definitely could've been more extended and flushed out than rushed. But it's still worth the watch. I have to say i haven't seen a drama where they tackle a taboo with such honesty.

First 5 episodes were great but then idk what happened.

The female lead has the strangest behaviour ever she doesnt take part in anything, she doesnt make decisions on her own, all she does is hurt the male lead without any real reason. She insists on listening to her mother which is tbh a very petty person, a truly unlikeable character. Her feelings are half assed and she doesnt seem that serious about her partner. Her character is so bad written that its almost tiring to watch her.

The male lead is a very kind hearted person who doesnt know when to stop.
Being this forgiving is never a good thing.

The story is kinda boring, its like a family drama. Could be better but i think they stopped trying midway

THE MUSIC OMG THE SAME SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN

At first it looked exciting but it turned out to be very boring.

A crown jewel of a drama!

I do not even know how to start this review. All I know is :
1. I am elated to have even beheld this drama
2. It is such a jewel.

A jewel of real life to be more precise. Something in The Rain is a true to life drama. It showcases in such a poignant way , the first flutterings of love . It brilliantly portrays how relationships are all about timing and that, perhaps, the love of your life is the person you have known for 10+ years and all it takes is a moment of true courage and realism to change everything that relationship previously pivoted on. Its a drama about courage and how love can inspire in us ,our most beautiful selves . That love is not consuming but uplifting. That to love is ultimately to be brave and unapologetically truthful and searingly honest with our true selves.

SOTR also sublimely offers wider commentary on societal norms and issues. It can also be viewed as a drama that takes a microscopic look on women in the workplace and the micro aggressive trials that they face . The social commentary on the patriarchal Patsy i.e women who pander to patriarchy so they can benefit was realistically done .To add to the more real life ethos of this drama ,the antagonists were antagonists you would encounter in real life . People who want to get ahead in life and will do whatever it takes . People who will earnestly have your back and sincerely want to look out for you but drizzle your life with toxicity.

I cannot honour this drama without touching on the wonderful director- Ahn Pan Seok. I have watched his previous work in Secret Love Affair which is also stellar but he really delivered in SOTR . Perhaps over delivered. The use of wide shots firmly put the viewer in their place. He tells us through his angles that we are observers of passion and peoples lives. To create such ambience is truly art and I tremendously applaud! The attention to detail is amazing that even doors , wine bottles and elevators have acting prowess ! The director also has a knack of fleshing out his leads .In the short span of ten minutes,we see the various personas of one character which is very skillful .

Speaking of leads - AHMAZING . Son Ye Jin was astounding and Jung Hae In was spell bounding .Terrific performances from the both of them and their chemistry is second to none in all the K drama's I have watched.

The music is absolutely gorgeous . It had this coffee house feel which was soo sublime for words to portray.Rachel Yamagata's pieces were tear inducing and Bruce Willis rendition of Save the Last Dance could just make me swoon. I loved every single track . Hats off to the musical direction too because insertion was perfect. "with your love, I can see anything through..." I cannot stressssss to you how perfect this OST was for this drama!

OVERALL- You may find it doesn’t answer some things- a lot of viewers have problems with the ending and the general latter half of the drama but that is the realism, the genius and design of Ahn Pan Seok.SOTR intention is not to be thoroughly satisfying with a bow because ultimately , life is not like that .Things happen in life . Things also lose momentum and things pick up again too. Usually with no design!

To portray all that in a drama ?! I call GENIUS.

Truly, I think I fell a little in love with the idea of these two being in Love!

I think the fact that I'm getting older might have something to do with this, but I couldn't peel my eyes away from the screen whilst watching this. I'm under 30, so I don't clearly understand a lot of the pressures they face. But, honestly... I also related so much to being a part of a family that doesn't really believe in you.
But, besides that, I think I related to a lot of the tears, i related to the pain and the moments where it got too hard. Not only romantically, but in life... and the ambience of the show was so warm and cosy for the most part. even the sad scenes, and the painful scenes, had a level of comfort in them.

I don't know what it was... perhaps something in the rain. ;)

"You can dance-every dance with the guy, who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight, you can smile-every smile for the man, who held your hand neath the candle light, but don't forget who's takin' you home, and in whose arms you're gonna be, so darlin' save the last dance for me."

BEST COUPLE!

So this has got to be one of my favourite dramas of all time because of so many reasons, and what made me discover my love for Jung Hae-In!

THE STORY
The story doesn't follow the typical romance tropes I see in Kdramas- there's no chaebols, deadly family secrets, nor is it a cinderella story. While there are typical family dynamics here, it all felt so real. The story pits Jin Ah and Joon Hee in not a "forbidden romance" but rather a romance that places them in an incredibly awkward situation. They're sort-of-friends (through their siblings) and live fairly average lives. There's the crazy mother obsessed with the family image that also pushes the plotline through. There are many mixed thoughts on the story, but I will acknowledge that a lot of times the story was very suffocating. I just wished for these two to catch a break- from work lives and home lives. Jin Ah reminds me of a lot of Asian girls I know and her family even mirrors a lot of my family dynamics. Many people will dislike much of her actions, but in the grand scheme, it's understandable how she's ended up in a lukewarm state because of how she was brought up. I also like the other plot happening at work- the director really knows how to make two large situations together to create one suffocating problem, but one that makes sense and doesn't take away from the other problem. The story leads you to sympathize and hate different decisions, but it's life. Neither Joon Hee nor Jin Ah were perfect, and that's what made it real and believable. You really need tissues and to make sure you're in the right state of mind for this one, but the skillful writing was very well-done.

THE CAST
Son Ye Jin and Jung Hae In are two of my favourite actors. They both executed their roles perfectly and the tender nuances in their gazes- wow. I melted, cried and laughed with them. While I love both of them, I was very pleasantly surprised by Hae-In's skill in acting and how he completely charmed me and swept me off my feet. I could feel the emotion from the other side of the screen. Hae-In has the nuances of Joon Hee so down and you can see that he's been interested in his noona for a while but never really acted or even realized it himself hahaha. I also admire the improv skills they have, and their amazing chemistry. I watched a lot of behind the scenes and I saw how much improv they've done and I was shocked silly. Honestly, Hae-In is a very skilled improv actor and he really knows how to place himself in the shoes of his character. Ye Jin also is an actor that you can sense the experience of right off the bat and she really brought her Noona role to life here. Also, I appreciated how the director kept a lot of the improv and encouraged it all! Honestly, the same director as One Spring Night and they're both so well directed!

MUSIC
God, do not get me started. The music here was amazing and really set the scene. The arrangements were perfect and set the whole kind of "flashback/vintage" vibe immediately. Whoever arranged the set and the music did a phenomenal job. They complimented each other beautifully and I actually had all the songs from the soundtrack on repeat for a month. I literally play this music whenever I sit in the rain and the scenes with just music and their crazy antics were executed beautifully.

REWATCH VALUE
Honestly, I'd watch this 100 more times. I've watched it about five times now (though not completely). I wouldn't watch every single episode again if I didn't want to feel the suffocation from the angst (don't get me wrong I loved the angst) but you know my heart can't take breaking that much all the time hahah. Honestly, flag your favourite episodes and rewatch those or rewatch it all with a couple of friends- this drama is bound to bring a lot of discussions.

CONCLUSION
A beautiful and well-told story. Honestly, the director and videographers did an amazing job and the shots were timed perfectly and chosen perfectly for each scene. Honestly, I'm keeping an eye on this director because all his works are similar vibe and are skillful pieces of art. Ahn Pan-seok is a rare talent and also so funny during filming! All the production crew did a great job as well. I loved this and the story will always live in me and I don't have enough words of praise to fully express my appreciation and love.
