Cute and Fluffy (slightly cringey) drama about Love, Teamwork, Perseverance and Mommy issues.

Completed - 1/21/2022

A big reason why I want to watch "To Fly with you" is because of Wang An Yu (ML). I fell in love with him when watching "Forever Love", my favorite young adult drama. I could still imagine his loving gazes and I am glad to see them in this drama as well. However, his character here is very different than in "Forever Love".

This drama is quite similar to "Skate into Love". We have our leads struggling to succeed or to maintain their reputation in their respective sports. We see issues with initial team chemistry, rivalries, sportsmanship, love triangles, etc. However, this drama feels a lot "younger". The characters are all college students, but I feel like I was watching a high school drama, based on the way they talk and act. And because of this, I didn't enjoy the romance as much as I thought I would. It's probably because I am older and I am not the target audience. I don't recall feeling that way when I was watching "Skate into Love".

This drama is probably made to promote Beijing's Winter Olympics in February 2022. I would think the government might have provided a little funding. But the number of product placements in this drama is quite amazing. We have the usual drinks, snacks, skin care, face masks.... but also apps on phone for cleaning service and job searches. I guess the government didn't pay much or at all, and it costs a lot of money for the actors to be trained.

One aspect I enjoy about this drama is the skating. Of course we know that the difficult jumps are not done by the actors, and they probably speed up the skating (esp. ML's final skate when executing difficult jumps). However, I rarely feel like I am watching bad/fake skating. I applaud the actors' ability to skate and act like they know what they are doing. FL is the only person that looks a little off to me when there's a close-up shot of her face when speed skating. I also enjoy the way the drama tries to educate the audience on the more technical aspects of speed skating and figure skating. I never knew the importance of having a teammate supporting and coordinating with you in speed skating (I thought it's a loner sport).

As a romance junkie, I have to talk about the romance here. The first half of the drama was quite fun for the main romance, though a little cringey at times. However, I am most annoyed with the confession miscommunication because it's so easy to just speak up instead of stuttering and holding back. Wang An Yu (ML) and Song Zu Er (FL) look good together and have good chemistry. Both of them are able to get down and dirty to act silly and embarrassing. Once the leads got together, it's quite smooth-sailing, less cringey but more sugary. On the other hand, the secondary romance took up too much screen time, and I find the character, Zhu Le Le (2FL) quite annoying. I wish the drama has lessened this romance and kept the drama at 30 episode-long.

Another weird thing I like about this drama is how sweaty and normal the athletes look. We don't have girls in full make-up trying to exercise. The girls really look like they're training hard and exhausted every day. My favorite character in this drama is Coach Zhuang, played by Pu Miao. She's such a good actress, esp. among all these young actors. She was tough as nails when coaching and screaming at the girls, but on the other hand, she was so vulnerable and hesitant when she saw her son.

I would recommend "To Fly With You" to those who enjoy a cute and fluffy sports drama.

a relationship that will make you feel so single

''a relationship that will make you feel so single''
that was my first thought after the leads got together! i seriously love how they were always there for each other through ups and downs, they are both so mature and never hesitate to talk to each other first when a problem arise. no stupid misunderstanding or breakup between the leads, it's fun to watch.

story: i enjoyed the series for the most part, i loved how they focused a lot on the ice skating parts because that's also one of the reasons why i watched it. i loved almost everything about this especially the main leads! the supporting characters are not bad either but i just liked the leads a lot more. there are lessons that are really meaningful and heartwarming, i really loved how they never fail to mention how important teamwork is to a team and how you can never get there with a magic bc you have to work hard for it! this was really a great series that has a touch of touching aspect of each athletes/characters striving and working really hard to reach their goal also with the great support of their family, friends and loved ones. i also really loved how their opponents are also nice! they accept defeat and make up for it, love that for them.

cast/acting: if you're gonna ask if there are annoying characters, yes there are, they got me really mad and annoyed but the leads make up for every annoying stuffs they does!! our main leads definitely made this show even more worth watching!! Wang An Yu is an amazing actor, this is my second drama of his and he never disappoints, he played Shao Bei Sheng really well! i have seen a lot of people who said SBS is dumb and annoying but i didn't really found him annoying although there was a time where i did found him dumb lmao but he's a really great boyfriend, friend and son, you can rely to him a lot. I think i haven't watch any of Song Zu Er's drama yet which just means that this is my first drama of hers and i found her really cute in here! she really grew on me! she also played Shen Zheng Yi really well, i don't really have any complaints with her character, i personally think she's really good and really adorable! ngl she never fails to make me tear up every time im seeing her cry TT

There's also 2nd couple but they kinda stressed me out tbh they had more misunderstandings more than the leads lmao but they were really cute when they were together, fun to watch and they're both a really great friend to our leads. There are some annoying characters but you can just skip them! there are more good ones that bad ones

if you're confused or curious if there's love triangle here, i would say there is but very little since the love triangle isn't that bad like other dramas have (also some probably do not even consider it a love triangle) since male lead has always have his eyes on female lead, you can clearly tell that both leads liked each other and no one can stop them from liking each other.. no one got into or affected the leads relationship after they got together so you don't have to worry at all! i honestly don't think it's possible for someone to have a 2nd lead syndrome either but it depends on u ig lol

The chemistry and comedy in the show is really good. the ice parts are also very interesting, thrilling and fun to watch!! even i got so nervous for them.. there maybe plot holes but I will definitely recommend you to give it a try!

Better Than I Expected *Minor Spoilers*

I usually don't care for sports themed dramas/shows/movies because sports just don't interest me much. I was also worried I wouldn’t care for this because the romance of the two leads wasn't front row and center.

HOWEVER, I found I really loved watching both their journeys in their respective sport as well as the constant support the main leads showed for each other. It was sort of intimate the way they understood the other person's struggles in their similar aspirations.

The chemistry between the two leads is really good. They manage to not only have that romantic factor but also each others best support. Once the main couple got together they stayed strong and healthy. They do kiss (for those looking for kisses) but I found their hugs to be something special. It felt like they really cared for each other. Almost as though those hugs washed away the stress and pressure of what their going through even if just for a few minutes. They're each other's rock.

I really appreciated that the misunderstandings aren't dragged out from episode to episode. They sort of serve their purpose pushing the story forward without making the viewer grit their teeth for 3+ episodes while the misunderstanding hangs in the air.

Honestly, it was just a really solid drama throughout with maybe 1 really laggy episode. This is not a wild and crazy drama. It's mostly calm (except for the coach's yelling) and well paced. You're not going to find a ton of melodramatics here but I feel that the sports side of the story provides a fair amount of excitement for viewers as well as the adorable moments between these 2 leads.

Would Recommend.

Legitimately confused why more people aren’t talking about this drama

To Fly With You is a perfect drama. Started watching for Song Zu Er who I’ve been obsessed with since watching her in Legally Romance and she does not disappoint. I was very impressed with all of the leads comedic acting as well, especially Wang An Yu and Li Hao Fei.

Great pacing, not a dull moment, and all the side characters were properly fleshed out with their own motivations that made sense. I also really appreciated the focus on friendships, with one of the most romantic scenes in the series (in my opinion) being between the FL and her best friend. Very cute and satisfying. Will be listening to the soundtrack, especially It’s All About Us and One More Time for a while after this I’m sure. Already rewatched because I’m crazy like that.

Cute and uplifting series

Storyline:
The premise mainly focused around ice skating sports and the life of an athlete - the aspirations, the determination, the sacrifices and team comradery. There's some light coming of age romantic comedy sprinkled in there and family relationship dynamics.

Acting/Characters:
- Song Zu Er (FL): she is one of my favorite up and coming young actresses after seeing her in Cupid's Kitchen. She did an amazing job in this role as well. She has the ability to portray the character in a spunky, witty, adorable, and kind in such a genuine charismatic way without coming across like she's trying to be cute. She is naturally adorable. But she can play the range of emotions...happiness, anger, and heartfelt emotional pain.
- Wang An Yu (ML): This was the first time I've seen him in any show. He did a decent job, but I think he was a bit overshadowed by Song Zu Er (FL) - his acting capabilities is not at her level. But overall they were cute and had chemistry.
- Support characters: for the most part all the supporting cast did a great job, especially Zu LeLe the FL's best friend. She was quite entertaining. Xiao Qing - at first I thought they were going to make her the main couple's protagonist to scheme and drive a wedge - while that was sort of the case but not completely. The actress played this role well - she made you not dislike her, but you kind of admire and empathize for her. The most hateable character was Luo Xiao Yi - the star athlete who was entitled and arrogant. I know that's the point of the character's role, but that actress made it even worse. There's something about her that is just very annoying and her acting is so bland. She was annoying in Legend of Fuyao as well.

Overall a very cute series that didn't stress you out with too much evil manipulating characters. However I don't think it's great enough to re-watch.

Idol romance meets ice rink

This is your typical idol c-drama with ice-sports as backdrop. Shen Zheng Yi is your typical female lead who has all the passion, the talent, the grit, and the optimism for speed skating, except professional training as her mum objects her dreams to be a professional speed skater. Supporting and helping her once she gets into a professional team is Shao Bei Sheng, your typical male lead who is the handsome, hardworking and talented Figure Skating Prince that's loved by everyone, including his strict mum who is also Zheng Yi's coach.

That said, typical doesn't mean it's not enjoyable. One of the greatest strength is this idol drama knows thyself well, and hence, does a good job in being a light hearted and sweet idol drama we expect it to be. Their relationship progress is mostly nice to watch, albeit with a little too much drama and cliches. What is enjoyable about this couple is their playful interaction, and support for each other through each challenge. Ultimately, this couple manages to make me care for them, and their relationship, especially by latter half of the drama - I guess it's a success by idol drama standard. The second couple in this show is also cute, I love how innocent and support of a friend both are as our main leads' sidekick.

What I enjoy the most for the show though is Coach Zhuang's tenacity and journey in instilling the right mindset for Zhu Feng Sports Club. Here, the drama spends time to highlight some of the teammates' improvement under Coach Zhuang's tutelage. While these supporting characters do not have enough limelight, they have their shared passion to the sports and own motivation, bringing more colors to TFWY. The cinematography of ice skating moments are great for an idol drama.

If there is one thing that bugs me about TFWY, it's the editing. As Shen Zheng Yi and Shao Bei Sheng have different specialization, there are 3 narratives to follow - (1) Sheng Zheng Yi and the Speed Skating team, (2) Shao Bei Sheng and his Figure Skating career, as well as (3) Zheng Yi's and Bei Sheng's relationship. Most of the time, it isn't too distracting... until competition days - I can't help but get sidetracked, wondering how our leads get so much interaction time in-between competitions. I mean, I know they are spread over a few days...still, shouldn't the one who hasn't compete focused on practice? And this indirectly affects the pacing of the show slightly, especially when we weave in the supporting characters, who have their own storyline too.

To sum it up, TFWY is an enjoyable idol drama about aspiring for your dreams. It's also a good introductory drama about speed skating, figure skating, and healthy athletism mindset.

One of the better youth sports dramas out there

After watching dozens of youth sports dramas I’ve become a bit jaded but I have to admit that this is one of the better ones out there. It’s not without its flaws, which I’ll talk about later, but overall it’s a pretty good drama. It reminds me a lot of Skate Into Love and Falling Into Your Smile, two of the best out there in my opinion. The romance is done well, it has some great comedy, the characters are well fleshed out, it’s interesting, and there’s lots of character growth.

The female lead is confident, talented, outgoing, and very determined to reach her goals of becoming a world class speed skater. I liked that she was a strong confident person and not one of those weak females that always needs saving. And she has the sweetest cutest father that’s always got her back. Their interactions were pure gold. Her mom isn’t too great at first but her character growth was a joy to watch.

The male lead is a really good guy that’s nice to everyone and very charming. Even when he’s badly injured by someone else’s negligence he never gets angry or blames them. He’s just an overall really sweet person. I liked that even though he’s really laidback and easygoing he always drew the line with any females that got interested in him romantically. And once he’s in a relationship with the female lead, he communicates well and is a really good loyal boyfriend that lets everyone know he’s only interested in her. He becomes such a little puppy around her and it’s so cute. His relationship with his mom is a big focal point of the drama that I really liked. There’s lots of character growth in their relationship and I really enjoyed it.

The romance was very well balanced and didn’t overwhelm the drama nor was it just a side note either. I liked that once the leads got together there wasn’t a bunch of silly misunderstandings, there were no evil second leads scheming against them, there were no breakups, no noble idiocy and no long separations. They had a very healthy relationship, it had its ups and downs but it was more realistic and endearing than most. It’s not a spicy drama with bedroom scenes or anything like that. It’s more of a youthful romance with lots of hugs, handholding, and sweet kisses. You get more of a light sweet fluffy feel from their romance.

So why did I give it an 8 instead of a 10? For two reasons, the storyline and the side romance of the main leads best friends. The storyline had every typical cliche you would expect to see in a youth sports drama. And it was so predictable that I correctly guessed the outcome of every major event or dramatic storyline twist before it happened. So I took off one full point for this reason. The other reason is the secondary romance. First off they put a very average looking girl in the role of the female leads supposedly very pretty bff. Then they took one of the hottest guys in the drama and put him in the role of the not so attractive guy friend that she initially overlooks for someone better looking. But the guy she overlooks him for isn’t anywhere near as hot as he is. And she’s no raving beauty (no insult intended, just being honest.) So just based on that, their storyline isn’t too believable. Then she treats him really badly throughout most of the drama. And when they finally get together she hides it like she’s ashamed of him. The poor guy just can’t catch a break. I really disliked the whole secondary romance and they spent a lot of time on it, especially in the first half of the drama. So I took another point off for this reason. They cast the wrong people to play the characters and then spent way too much time on a couple with no chemistry and an awful storyline.

That being said, I still really liked the drama. Even though the storyline was very predictable, the acting was phenomenal. The characters were very relatable and just about everyone had a lot of character growth. It has the underlying messages that you’d expect of a youth sports drama like “never give up your dreams” and “if you believe in yourself enough you can do anything.” But it also taught some valuable lessons that were not cliche or expected. It teaches us to not judge others too harshly. Sometimes we are quick to blame others because we can’t accept our own shortcomings. So when the truth finally comes out we have to face the harsh reality of our own failings. So it’s best to not be too judgmental or quick to blame.

In conclusion, it’s very cliche but the superb acting, likable characters, sweet romance, and great comedy elevate this drama above the rest. My advice would be to use the fast forward button liberally when watching the secondary romance and you’ll like it even better. But even with its flaws it’s still a very sweet touching drama that you’ll enjoy watching. I definitely recommend it.

From A Relationship Contract To A Real Relationship

To Fly With You
A light romantic college drama that related to Ice Skating Competition. This was the second Ice Skating drama after Skate Into Love. I think the vibes here also was the same with the older drama. It focused on the competitions, relationships and teamwork.

The production make the drama a bit light by adding some comedy actions and soundtracks. It will attract the audiences to watch without skipping and waiting for the latest episodes. At first, I thought this drama would be a plain one since I already watched the older drama ' Skate Into Love' before but I'm very touched with the production since they can make this drama interesting and alluring.

Opinions
~ I like the process of how two unknown people meet and engage without knowing they would fell in love with each other later. This is how Shao Beisheng and Shen Zhengyi were together after they ended their relationship contract. They wouldn't know that their hearts will attract and falling to each other.
~ It was so amazing to see how a figure skater doing their actions on the ice rink. They were showing a smooth and beautiful dancing liked they're perfect and nothing can stop them. That why Shao Beisheng can be looking so handsome when he doing a figure skating.
~ It was a bit dangerous for short track speed skater since they running fastly on the ice rink in a team to compete. So it was a bit nervous when watching their actions when they're doing the speed skater for the competition.
~ The funny part was when Shao Beisheng doing a confession to a wrong woman. I cant helped but laughed happily to see his expression when he sees a wrong woman that appeared in front of him. Even it was so funny but it was a bit pity to Xiao Qing since she got highest hope but then her hopes was gone.
~ It was so cute to see the relationship of second couple. They started their relationship in hidden without everyone know but later they're broke up because of some mistakes.
~ I'm hoping to see Zhengyi's mother can forgive Coach Zheng and do not hate her anymore. I do not want to see both of their daughter and son broke up because of undissolved matter.
~ It was good to see the teamwork of Zhengyi and her teams was already good. I hates to see the teams that bickered and argued each others.
~ ' Met the eyes of the guy/girl for ten seconds to know whether you fell in love with him/her or not'. It was a good idea to see whether you like the guy or not. I had it for my previous relationship, I cant met his eyes until we had confirmed our relations as a couple.
~ No break up. As usual, I always preferred if the drama does not used a 'break up' as a plot in the drama. If the relation of the couple were good enough, it was no need to add the plot of break up process for the couple. Not all the drama should used the same plot for every parts of their dramas. I loved the progress of relationship between Beisheng and Zhengyi. We can see on how good they managed their relationship to the better. They put 'trust' as the main point in their relationship. Even there was a problem arise, they can always solved it.
~ Supportive boyfriend ever. At first I thought Shao Besheng only childish and proud man. But when he was in relationship, we can see how he changed his attitudes to be supportive and mature man.
~ I loved the supportive cast like Limi and her girlfriend, Lu Bingbing. Limi was a good and supportive friend. Even he was in other team of figure skater but he always guided and motivated Beisheng when he's in needed. I could felt how sad he was when he lose to Beisheng in last competition but he accepted it. They're enemy on the ice rink but a best friend outside the ice rink. For Lu Bingbing, she positively accepted when she lose and helped Zhengyi to deal with referee when she mistakenly got penalty for her won in competition.

Character Intro
~ Wang Anyu was a leading actor and got many good scripts now. I watched his drama before such as Forever Love and Apple's dog. He acts as Shao Beisheng in this drama. He was narcist, proud and professional figure skater. But he also was a good and handsome guy who attracts many girls in college. He fell in love with Zhengyi after making a relationship contract with her.
~ Song Zuer acts a Shen Zhengyi. She was cute, sweet and brave girl. She has her interest in short track speed skater and want to be a professional athlete for that interest. She always tried to be better in her speed skater. She fell in love with Beisheng after becoming his contract girlfriend.

Overall
For me, I liked this kind of genre for the drama. The drama has a beautiful and perfect editing, the storyline was also alluring and the casts were someone that I had known before. I did not have high expectation for this drama but it was really exceed my expectation. Thus, I loved everything about this drama and completely fell in love with all the characters.

It was good to watch the plain drama than the drama that have a lot of conflicts. I always focused on this kind of drama and fully concentrate when watching it. Highly recommended to all audiences...

modern romance c-drama of the year

I must say this is the best modern romance c-drama this year. It's been so long since I watched a good drama like this. at first, i started watching this because of song zuer, I saw the trailer and gets really excited bcs of the ice skating thing production seems really promising. I watched the first episode and fall in love with wang anyu acting and ofc song zuer, the skating is very beautiful. I watch new eps everyday and don't realize already the last episode.

This drama has the best couple (main and second) chemistry, YOU WILL LOVE THEM, they are just too cute, Shao Beisheng character deserves appreciation, our prince of ice skating is so loveable.

The main thing I love about this drama is it doesn't just all about romance, and that kind of dramatic romance stuff, IT HAS STORY. This drama will make you laugh, feel the butterfly with their cute romance, and make you cry, you will go through their skating journey which makes you motivated, their family problems, etc. I personally like Zhuang Yue character (beisheng's mom) , she deserves the world, her mother's love for beisheng is just everything.

conclusion: this drama is a must-watch, the overall production is good

Lovely winter sports and romance drama

This was a lovely winter sports and romance story even with the expected elements, beautiful pictures, nice showcase of the ice sports. The actors are very good looking and act well, so despite the 33 episode length, the drama goes by smoothly. Both leads : Wang Anyu (as Shao Beisheng, the "Prince" of pair and figure skating) and Song Zuer (as Shen Zhengyi the budding speed skater who joins a team belatedly at age 18), and supporting characters were pleasingly portrayed. The shy college romance, ebullience and naiveté of some might make them look younger than their age group, but this makes for a "forever young" atmosphere. The older adults, teachers, coaches, parents, doctors are present too.
The brief appearance of real life speed skating legend Wang Meng 王濛 in episode 31 was a nice surprise.

The optimistic mindset, breaking down of mental barriers to overcome challenges and past or present traumas, emphasis on trust, friendship and team spirit in practical demonstration, importance of food and family, and learning something about the figure skating, speed skating and some more in present day college life in China, are some of what can be remembered.

This was a nice drama to watch before Winter Olympics and even after.

Winter sports have come to be popular in China, with ski domes and skating rinks in many cities (even tropical weather ones), bringing them to new and young players who may or may not also have enjoyed skating on natural ice in the north where winter freezes lakes and rivers. Those who want to embrace these sports professionally look further than inter college contests, having ambitions to be better and win honors even abroad with the teams they'd join. But it is clear that this is a physically and mentally demanding short career, where retirement comes very early, sometimes as early as graduation from the university where they joined teams (Wang Meng in real life retired in 2014 after an injury and converted to business after earning a diploma in Business administration from Renmin Daxue). The drama shows realistically the hurdles, jealousies and joys of training in sports beyond the amateur level, and what such players may expect for their future.

When hopes are dashed, converting the energy to look away from the closed and locked door, and find the open window to move forward again, is pleasingly shown in this drama. I may go to rewatch some parts or episodes that I liked, not only for the sweet romance or comedic moments.

Best skating drama so far

I really don't understand why the drama has 8.1, atleast for me this drama should score higher by far the most entertaining skating drama there is. Skate into love is super long I still loved it but it was too long and My unicorn girl was just a big meh. I finish both dramas but none got loved as much as To fly with you did. I love both stories of the leads, the male character is very decent with the female lead and I just loved how the drama didn't give more troubles to their relationship once they get together. I know the drama could've given more " skating" scenes but you do know the actors are not the real ones so my guess is they is so much the production can do to make it seem they are indeed skating. For me this is the best skating drama and I wish it was longer, the last episode went by so fast.
