Y muchas gracias a la seguidora que me recomendó Doom at Your Service!!

Protagonizado por Park Bo Young y Seo In Guk,

Doom
At
Your
Service
DAYS (los 100 días de Tak Dong Kyung)

✔️Lo bueno:
Grandes actuaciones
Buen guión
Excelente fotografía
Excelente OST

A Drama for Philosophers and Deep Thinkers

(I tried to not write spoilers, but to leave little cues that might also make your viewing experience more enjoyable if you read the review before you watch it.)
So, for me this a drama with so many layers, I don't even know where to start.

At the beginning all I could do was just go with the feelings it created. I think the cinematography and storytelling is so well done, you can just float by on the feelings it creates if you let yourself. Turn off the logical brain and just let yourself be there with these people, living and knowing they will soon die. The pain of it, and the twisted turns the human heart takes to the point of relief.

And that is the second layer. People do start acting weird when they hear the clock ticking, the existential dread causing people to go through all the stages of grief.
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression/Grief
Acceptance
This can be seen in all the "restarts" the drama takes. Understandably this was boring for some, but it made a lot of sense to me. I don't want to get too spoilery, but if you have watched it, you can see these stages clearly.

Having had cancer-scare (it was something else, thank deity) myself this year, I understood Dong-Kyungs every emotion and reaction right of the bat. Pretending like it was nothing, getting angry, getting sad, worrying about the people you leave behind, getting upset by the injustice of it and even wishing they would forget about you.

Another layer was Myul Mang and Dong Kyungs journeys to leading fulfilled lives. Both are depressed and wish the world could just end, so they would not have to suffer ever again.
Both felt lonely and out of place, both processing their negative feelings about suffering in different ways, one by being apathetic and resentful and the other by being people pleasing and internalising pain to an unhealthy degree.
One needed to learn how to love, even when faced with the inevitable ending and the other needed how to be selfish, even when faced with the inevitable ending. To truly live means to grow, and to grow means to accept suffering and joy all the same.

What can be more poetic than having to learn to love Doom in order to surive?

Another layer to me was the religious aspects, of having two deitys, one the creator, one the destroyer and both have been made by and for man to explain the randomness of suffering. This is part of many religions. But especially Buddhism has this ethos of having to go through the same suffering in different ways until you accept fate and learn the lesson in this life and grow. Here again, the frequent repetition of their old patterns is explained. Especially the part in the middle where they can both can see what they would have been had they not grown through their pain and their joy in each other.

A whole other layer is hidden in the many symbolisms, the flower, the strange dialogues, pictures and books mentioned in the show. Admittedly, I had to watch every episode twice to really catch them, having been taken up with the emotion of it in the first run. I knew I was missing something, even though I am a philosophy nerd, but one of the more obvious ones was the Pinocchio reference (from puppet to man) and the butterfly metaphor (creeping, metamorphosis, which is basically dying and being rebuilt, and then flying). What I was missing, was that a lot of the dialogue and scenes are based on Nietzsches book "Thus spoke Zarathustra", because I haven't read it, duh. If you want to know more about this, I recommend this blog: https://mindmeltonabun-blog.tumblr.com/tagged/doom-at-your-service

Btw, I am not one to care about OSTs much, unless they are extraordinary, but here I really noticed how well it was cut together with what was happening in the scene.

And no, I don't want to talk about Ep.15. I never rate dramas on their wrap up episodes, because let's admit it, most of them are a mess.

Where To Begin With One Of The Most Mixed-Reception Dramas Of 2021…

First of all before critiquing " Doom At Your Service"( " DAYS") , let’s address the biggest controversy surrounding the mixed-criticism by viewers . There is the vocal contingency of devoted watchers who loved the series , and then the critics who argue that the storyline was a complete " waste of time”. However, this leaves newcomers on one hanging question; is the show actually worth watching?

Let’s start on an issue which both defenders and critics of the show seem to agree upon ; the casting. Let’s be honest. If you’re a diehard K-drama fan, it’s likely that your immediate attraction to this drama happened to be A-listers Park-Bo Young, Seo In Guk and Lee-So Hyuk staring back at you through the screen. It’s undeniable that these big names don’t disappoint ; Bo Young flourished as our female lead Do In- Kyung, Seo In Guk offered a dynamic performance away from his typical boyish charm roles as Myul Mang, and Lee Soo Hyuk’s baritone-style voice was perfectly suited for delivering Cha Joo-Ik’s one-liners.( Even our supporting cast consisting of Kang Tae Oh [Lee Hyun Gyu],Shin Do Hyun [Na Ji Na],and Woo Hee Jin [Kang Soo Ja ] helped to add their own beguiling charms in the drama.)

So, why has an intriguing drama with a fairly star-studded cast, sparked so much mixed reception from watchers?Well, this problem ultimately boiled down to the screenwriting.

On an arguably positive note , ” Doom At Your Service” does certainly cast its net far by employing the common trope of " misfortunes" to present Dong-Kyung as an “appealing female lead”;an orphan with a fractious younger brother , despising her job and casting ill-fortune upon the world when she finally gives up all hope with her terminal-illness. This leads her to her fated meeting ( literally) with “Doom" ( aka. Myul Mang) and soon peculiar romantic sparks flare from here.

However, it soon becomes apparent in the drama that screenwriter Im Me Ah Ri fell victim to using cliches as a pillar of support for the storyline, rather than an asset. Ultimately this stunted the plot and character growth due to the screenwriter’s lackadaisical investment in these key areas of the drama. (For example, Dong Kyung’s illness was only used as a necessity for "tension" rather than to solidify her sentience as an individual. The series could have explored so much here with her impending fate, but instead brushed this over in order to invest more time upon the “ puppy dog eyes” between Dong Kyung and Myul Mang.)

Similarly this is case and point with our male lead Myul Mang. In between his tedious monologues with "So Nyeo Shin" ( Jeong Ji So), our male lead undeniably was intriguing; a a powerful deity-like being who struggles to comprehend human emotions, however , this is where we hit the biggest rut with his character also; his sudden change of heart in regards to his involvement with Dong Kyung.

Some devoted watchers of the drama argued this was " "beautiful" by the reversal of the male lead’s personality, whilst others just saw this as lazy screenwriting. For those unfamiliar with the plot ( and without decisive spoilers), Do-Kyung wants to make Myul Mang fall in love with her, Myul Mang toys with her affections by manipulating elements of her reality ( but soon comes round to ‘ feeling bad for her ’ after Nyeo Shin lends a hand), then Do-Kyung decides she is no longer interested in him, leading to a whole reversal of chasing after one another and repeat.

This isn’t to condemn the main pairing entirely. Park Bo Young and Seo In Guk had brilliant chemistry onscreen and there were certainly some fairly sweet moments between their characters .However their characters did sadly suffer as a consequence of this lacklustre character development which was particularly certified by the existence of the "contract".

Now, without decisive spoilers , it is pivotal to say that this " contract" played an important role in the exposition of the storyline . Yet whilst it was an intriguing premise, the " rules" surrounding this contract were often ineffably upturned by the actions of Myul Mang. Whilst a later storyline revelation did offer an adequate explanation , this reduced the " contract" to being nothing more than a plot MacGuffin; thrown in to add tension, but ultimately useless towards defining the lore of DAYS’ fictionalised world .

Of course, a storyline does not always have to contain a big battle with the " big bad" or an internal conflict for the hero, however, this is also where dramatic irony became prominent with ” DAYS”. The evident ending goal of " DAYS" ( without spoilers) surrounds the female lead making her final wish. Of course whilst this does become a major plot line throughout the drama, the series often dismissed this problem to play upon the separate idea of the ‘’ paring" of our main leads. ( Rather than interlinking the two more concisely.)

This isn’t to drag the entirety of the series down. There were certainly some enjoyable moments with Dong-Kyung’s brother Tak Seon Kyung ( Dawon), Dong Kyung’s doctor and client Jung Seung Jun ( Lee Seung Jun), the haughty teen writer '' Young Prince" ( Nam Da Reum), and the terminally-ill writer ‘’Dalgona’’ ( Oh Yeon Ah).

Even our second leads had some oddly sweet moments with tight-lipped Cha Joo Ik chasing the affections of our bubbly writer Na Ji Na. Until the love triangle with Ji Na’s former schoolmate Lee Hyun Gyu ( Kang Tae Oh)was introduced into the subplot .

This isn’t to say that their scenes were unwatchable . For the most part, these side characters had the potential to be very interesting. However, at times this made viewers fell as though they were watching very different storylines; a potentially intriguing modern fantasy drama, and then a cutesy slice of life romance show with a ” love triangle". These two plot lines rarely collided and when this did occur, lacking screen-time undeniably made the subplot feel sporadic and disconnected from the main storyline .

However, it’s impossible not to talk about subplot characters without bringing up the problem of "So Nyeo Shin". This character could have easily been one of the most intriguing elements to the drama . However, there were a couple of factors which let us down on this front; lacking character development and then the actress Jeong Ji So. Now, this isn’t to hate upon the actress. Respectfully, she has had a well-established career as a child actress and certainly does have charisma. On the other hand for this performance, Ji So was nearly literally reading her lines in monotone rather than adding something to her tone. Viewers should have felt as though they were watching a godlike being in a human guise , not just Ji So regurgitating her lines onscreen.

The finale of the drama could have admittedly gone down several routes ( and there was evident uncertainty over what would be the chosen ending) , however, the chosen ending wasn’t entirely bad per say, just lacklustre by failing to explain and wrap up some key story points.

So, is " Doom At Your Service" actually worth watching? This entirely depends on what you’re looking for . If you’re a fond fan of a drama with cliche romances , aesthetic cinematography and arbitrary philosophy , then you’ll absolutely appreciate this drama . However, those looking for a well-rounded and profoundly plot-driven drama with intriguing characters , then " Doom At Your Service" will certainly not fit the bill.

Wasted Potential

A good story and captivating start but developed to be an "excessive" tearjerker, TBH it could have been a big hit (Facepalm).

But it didn't.

Why it could have been a big hit?
It got a generally-likeable fantasy genre, a mysterious yet charming immortal male lead, an A-class casting lineup, a great couple chemistry and mostly, a fascinating storyline (in the start).

But why it didn't became one?
Poor arrangement on plots, less impressive production, a let-down on the mysterious characters development, dull climax and mostly, too much unnecessary parting and whining (from the girl who is facing death).

I really enjoyed the start where the female lead signed a contract with "Myeol Mang" (sort of like a destroyer) and thereafter started their ill-fated relationship. I was actually pretty excited when the female lead swore that she was going to make "Myeol Mang" her love of life so he can die for her, so "Korean drama cliche" but I just love it. Of course we all know they will eventually fall in love but "How?" is something we anticipate. Well, it turned out they fell in love before I even noticed, and oddly started with all the emotional parting (again and again) and accepted their fate (again and again). The flow was a bit off for me as I didn't feel their deep-down love and suddenly they are willing to give up their lives for each other, like huh? I don't deny they look pretty good together, but the story development was quite lacking though.

At first, I felt the story was a little complicated, especially the conversation between "Myeol Mang" and the "Deity girl", so I thought they were somehow building up for the climax, hmmm it turns out to be.... nothing. When you are always waiting for something unexpected, it failed your expectation. It's like you are eating a candy floss, the first bite was so great but before you can savour it, it's gone. Yes, the second half of the drama was an empty-shell. There was so much potential in the "Deity girl" character, but she didn't really contribute anything significant to the show and it turns out like destiny has controlled her instead, she gave up and become a Samaritan for the couple LOL

Honestly, it could have been better if they have more plots on how they developed feelings (maybe on how their hate turns into love) instead of just using almost 10 episodes to cry, to escape and to get back together. As for second couple, a so-so to me too, as their love-triangle was pretty draggy too, however I find Cha Joo Ik's role pretty interesting, especially how he uses his poker face for love confession, sarcasm, even when cracking a joke LOL.

Basically, I stayed on to the end mainly for the casts, simply enjoying Seo In Guk's alluring smirk, Park Bo Young's adorable expression and Lee Soo Hyuk's attractive deep voice. That's about it. Wasn't that excited for the storyline as you will be able to figure out the ending on your own by looking at the pace of the story and how it develops, it's like even if you missed out a few episodes you will be able to catch up haha.

These are just my point of view, and I believe people might have different thoughts on the drama, saw the comment area is just flooded with criticism. I don't regretted watching it though, that's why it deserves at least 7.0 for me, a "slightly above-average" piece? Just that we have so much dramas out there to compare with and it just loses out, but not so bad actually, or maybe because I have seen worse.

A pleasant surprise

I personally didn't have any expectations or set any standars on what a drama should or shouldn't have if its a fantasy and maybe that and other points where the reason i enjoy it so much.
(I may be changing the rates because i'm very indecisive and correcting some of my spelling and wording mistakes, english isn't my first lenguage so please have that in mind if you want to skip this review)
What i love about this drama?
1) The characterization of the protagonists Tak Dong Kyung and Myul Mang.
I never felt they were cartonish or that there was a lacK or rushed development. They felt real and the combination of good writting and an excellent acting from both parts ParK Bo Young who made you cry in every scene she wants you to cry and Seo In Guk who is able to carry a scene with just his eyes make them as individual characters and their relationship probably one of the best things of this drama and what makes it worthy of your time.
2) It felt like poetry
Quoting George Lucas "Its like poetry it rhymes' thats the way i felt about this drama. When you have an audience engage and making theories after every episode, picking up the little clues you were leaving in every episode and that those theories become true in a way that fit the story and its true with the message that the story wanted to tell just tell me its good writting. Im Me A Ri did an really good job making common tropes their own and give the story a closure that feels like poetry.
3) The messages behind every episode
I never leave an episode feeling unafected once i start to care about this characters (something that happend slowly but for me that makes it even more satisfying) i always end up either crying or thinking about the quotes and messages behind every episode. I never felt the sadness was shadowing the story it has always a message of hope and kindness.
4) The romance between the main leads
The chemistry between both actors was on point and they could carry every scene no matter what dialogue you put them through i could watch only scenes of them for hour without getting tired. Writting a story that starts with the typical 'enemies to lovers' is not a easy thing and i think the writter nailed every aspect of the main romance. It didn't felt rushed or that it was throw in my face. I understand why they both felt that way and why they made sometimes such extreme decisions. It was entretaining and then beautiful and sad it was everything i could ask for a 'fantasy' romance and more because the best part of it was how human it felt.
5) The concepts of 'life' and 'death'
I don't want to go to much into the spoiler territory but the way this show captures the personification of life and death its very unique and interesanting. For me it was never a problem how poetic both deiditys speak in fact i enjoy the scenes between them a lot. Jung Ji So as the deidity who represent life does an amazing job and it takes you to a ride of emotions that's for sure.
6) I doesn't lose it charm but it gets better
Something i was hapily surprise is how some of my favorite episodes and in my opinion the best written and acted were torwards the end. I think episode 14 for example is brilliant and it gives closure in a good moment and leaves the story a moment to breathe on episode 15.
7) The Cinematography and OST
Something i love about this drama is how the cinematography doesn't distract you or i feels like you are watching a very expensive AD. In fact the most beautiful moments are without CGI and makes you appreciate the little things in real life like leaves falling or the flowers blooming. And the OST its beautiful its melancholic and every song felt very special "Breaking Down" its probably my favorite OST in the year and it may go as one of my favorites ever from a kdrama.
Now what i dislike and i will go a little bit in to the spoiler territory but not that much:
1) The 'love triangle' between the second leads, in one aspect it doesn't really take that much of the screentime (the romance between them) so it wasn't something that it stop me from watching the whole drama. I have a few problems with one is that it felt flat, compared to the main romance and in general it just wasn't my cup of tea. I think the reason was i couldn't understand why this people were even in love to begin with, i guess we can say its sort of realistic the childish romance between Ji Na and Hyung Gyu and by episode 14 i could see what was the intention behind this storyline (about how your first love isn't always your last and about two people living with the ghost of a relationship when love is no longer there) but the execution just wasn't for me. Between Ji na and Joo Ik it just felt flat in general and compared to the main leads. The "back story" was weird and not really well written. I didn't like or enjoy the romance between them. I honestly didn't like either male characters of the love triangle for various reasons (as some people said here if i re-watch i'm defently going to skip those scenes). Thats why i'm giving a 8 in story, this should had handle better (the actors were good so this is not on them at all).
In general i love the main leads, Dongkyung family and Jina, and i enjoy every scene with those characters. I fell in love with it by episode 3 and 4 and i wasn't disappointed i cry i laugh and i loved to read people theories and see them come alive.
It made (no pun ineed) my days better. So thank you for the cast and crew (and also the fans who write so many good theories and posts) i will remember this experience forever.
In addition: I read some reviews asking why peope are giving high reviews i can't speak on everyone so i'm speaking on myself. For me the drama was Dongkyung and Myulmang and the dynamics they have with each other and with other characters that was probably a 75% of the screentime and i enjoy that (Spoilers: I loved how the MMDk relationship envolve i didn't found it rushed they become one of my favorite main relationships in kdramas i loved the found family scenes with Myulmang i love the message of you aren't alone and the scenes with Dongkyung family being there for her also the emotional scene with Jina was brilliant and they are so many i could write an essay). I think the acting was impresive i had never watch anything with PBY or SIG and i was truly moved by their perfomances and on my personal view their acting and their characters elevate the drama for me. I spend my time doing video editing since 2012 and watched a lot of media to work with and i found a lot of scenes from those characters memorable they moved me inside and make me cry when i'm not a person who cries easily. This rating system is tricky but since as i mention before i dislike the love triangle and two characters of it i'm giving to the story for now a 8 who knows maybe i change it because i'm very indecisive. But in general because all that i mention above and again the acting of PBY and SIG is why i give it a 9. But that's just MY personal opinion.
If you haven't watch the drama yet and are wondering my opinion is you should try and see it for yourself at the end of the day maybe for one person was boring for other wasn't for one person suceed their expectations and for other didn't they are just opinions.
For me just because of Dongkyung and Myulmang i was entretained for the 16 episodes and i wait for every Mon/Tues to see the episodes. They will remain in my heart more because my country still in lockdown and sometimes every day felt the same but with DAYS (i just love the tittle haha) i have something to look forward too. I hope i manage to reply those people question a little.

Story falls in place nicely + extremely likable characters!!!!

I’ve watched a lot of dramas, but this one has definitely become one of my favorites. The characters, the story, and the production suits my taste PERFECTLY!! Here are the main reasons why I love this drama so much.

ALL CHARACTERS ARE VERY LIKABLE
- TDK is the first female lead that I can relate to this much. She is someone who suppresses her emotions and pretends to be fine on the outside so she wouldn’t be a burden to her loved ones. Also, little things like the way she acts, the way she talks and reacts is different from many typical female leads. She is very honest, genuine, and sometimes effortlessly funny. She’s extremely likable and I would love to be her friend if it were possible.
- MM’s character development made him extremely likable (more about that below). When MM is in love, he does not force anything or make TDK feel uncomfortable in any way. His love for her is very genuine and that is shown in lots of scenes. Although MM acts cold and sometimes careless towards the deity, he is extremely respecting of her and understands that there is a greater, deeper layer below everything that he may not know about.
- The deity is wise and knows what she is doing. A very respected character which can be seen especially at the end. It’s interesting seeing the way she delivers messages.

LOTS OF REALISTIC CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
- MM starts with emptiness inside but slowly warms up and proceeds to understand the value of life. It’s very fulfilling seeing him grow as a character and realize the purpose of life by experiencing love.
- Throughout life, TDK locked up her emotions inside so that she can look fine in front of the ones she loved. Throughout the drama, she begins to open up more and starts to find the good in letting out emotions and talking to someone about them. She realizes that problems can be solved together.
- The story of the second lead couple showed lots of character development as well (more below).

STORY FALLS INTO PLACE NICELY
- The story unfolds very nicely and naturally
- There is a reason for everything
- When everything falls into place nicely, it’s extremely satisfying and fulfilling

SCRIPT IS WRITTEN VERY NICELY
- The way thoughts and emotions were expressed with words were very comfortable and suited my taste very well.
- Some things were said not too direct so that they required a bit more thought and space to interpret (mostly from the deity and from CJI)
- There is subtle humor throughout the drama making it enjoyable to watch (IT’S LITERALLY MY SENSE OF HUMOR I’M SO HAPPY HAHAH)

NO ANNOYING MISCOMMUNICATIONS
- The characters know how to communicate with each other
- Of course there are some little misunderstandings, but none of these turn into the main conflict of the plot. In general, the characters are quite open with each other and are true to each other. They don’t hide major things from each other and usually always communicate every problem.
- The first lead couple tries to solve problems together. They always have understanding for each other. When there are unexpected/impulsive events, the other character will always understand and be open to help.

NO USELESS FRUSTRATING CLIFFHANGERS
- The episodes end naturally without frustrating cliffhangers but still leave you waiting for the next one.
- Similar for scenes. The scenes come to an end nicely, there is no switching back and forth between two set of events. This allows you to fully focus on one event at a time which I think is important in this type of drama.

NO DRAGGING, NO FILLER SCENES
- Every scene serves its purpose
- I never felt that the drama was boring or dragging in any way
- The story and romance unfolds at a natural and realistic pace

AMAZING ACTING
- Great chemistry between the leads
- Emotions are expressed so well in every scene
- No awkwardness
- Natural and realistic
- It seemed like the actors got quite close during the 6 months of filming (from the behind the scenes videos) which may be why they had great chemistry and were able to act so well together

SECOND LEAD COUPLE
- The way I perceived it, the main purpose of the second lead couple is to show character development. It’s about moving on and letting go of something that has been held onto for too long. Although the outcome is predictable, it’s extremely satisfying seeing the characters grow as a people. For me, this side story was very relatable and understandable. I was able to gain empathy for all three characters involved in the love triangle.

THE OSTS COMPLIMENT THE SCENES
- The OSTs are memorable and add so much emotion to the scenes
- I’m actually listening to the OSTs while writing this review LOL

I hope this review was helpful! I really do recommend this drama!!!

TDK = Tak Dong Kyung (1st Female Lead)
MM = Myeol Mang (Doom) (1st Male Lead)
CJI = Cha Joo Ik (2nd Male Lead)

This review may contain spoilers

definitely worth watching!

i'm not sure why there's so many negative reviews because personally i enjoyed this drama very much, although there is cliché moments that people might not like; the relationships in this show is what brings it all together. i loved seeing the development of all the main characters and side characters. i think the show could've developed on some parts like adding more to the side characters story and giving us more at the end but other than that i would say this show has been an emotional journey. the only con i can think of is the ending, they disappointed me with that because i think the episode could've been stretched out more, possibly a wedding happening and how all the other characters improve in the future.
out of 10, i rate it an 8 because of those reasons.
asides from that i loved the cast, everyone is an amazing actor especially seo inguk who showed various emotions during this show and park boyoung who also did an amazing job. also dawon from sf9, i believe this was his acting debut and i'm just so overwhelmed with his performance because he did it so well! i'm looking forward to how his acting will develop.
i will end my review here by saying give it a chance! it might not be for everyone but i fell in love with it straight away and i'm so glad i watched it, so who knows? you might feel the same way too.
